biodiversity blitz
The Melbourne Biodiversity Blitz is a month-long citizen science initiative led by Yarra Ranges Council in partnership with other Melbourne councils. It runs throughout September—Biodiversity Month and invites residents to record as many wild species as possible using the iNaturalist app. It’s a fun, educational way to get involved in local conservation.
🌿 Program Highlights
Goal: Identify and log wild flora and fauna to contribute to biodiversity data.
Councils involved: Includes Yarra Ranges, Baw Baw, Bayside, Casey, Frankston, Knox, Maroondah, Mornington Peninsula, and more.
How to participate:
Download the iNaturalist app or sign up online.
Join the Yarra Ranges Biodiversity Blitz 2025 project….or one of the many other councils participating!
Take photos of naturally occurring plants and animals between Sept 1–30.
Upload them to iNaturalist—your observations are automatically added to the project.
🧠 Why It Matters
Helps scientists and researchers access real-time biodiversity data.
Encourages nature exploration and environmental awareness.
Builds community engagement through friendly competition (check the leaderboard!).
🌱 Respectful Observing Tips
Stick to paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and never pick plants.
Leave fledgling birds alone—they’re likely learning to fly.
Report injured animals to wildlifevictoria.org.au.
How to participate
Download the iNaturalist app on your phone or create an account at iNaturalist.ala.org.au
Take photos of flora and fauna between 1st and 30th September and upload them to iNaturalist. (Flora contributions should be of naturally occurring plants, not those purchased and planted.) Your observations will automatically be added to the Yarra Ranges project.
