Healesville Community Emergency Group

Over the past two years, Council has been working alongside four incredible communities—Monbulk, Healesville, Yarra Junction, and Mount Dandenong/Kalorama—on the Place-Based Resilience Planning Project. 🌱🔥

This initiative has been all about empowering local communities to lead the way in strengthening township resilience and bushfire preparedness.

Through community-led workshops, hazard assessments, and practical risk reduction strategies, each town has developed its own tailored approach to protecting lives, infrastructure, and the environment.

One standout example is the Healesville Community Emergency Group and the development of the Healesville Bushfire Impact Mitigation Plan. With support from the Federal Government’s Preparing Australian Communities grant program, this group collaborated with fire agencies and locals to identify key risks, prioritise actions, and map out a science-informed plan to reduce bushfire impacts. What makes this plan so powerful is that it’s truly community-driven. It captures local knowledge and values, and outlines clear actions across three core areas: 🏠 Built assets – all constructed buildings and infrastructure 🌾 Rural assets – including pastures, crops, and vineyards 🌳 Natural ecosystems – forests, wetlands, and the wildlife they support At the heart of this project is the understanding that bushfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, and locally informed plans help create a more connected, resilient, and better-prepared community.
